Public Safety Services
Over 45 Years of Helping You to Protect and Serve
We take pride in helping agencies hire and promote the best candidates. We work with over one hundred agencies and have evaluated several thousand applicants for the full spectrum of public safety roles. We conduct evaluations for law enforcement officers, corrections officers, community service officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and dispatchers. Our extensive process is objective, cost-effective, and well-validated. We help our clients to ensure that they are following the guidelines laid out by both the Minnesota POST Board and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).
We provide a wide range of services, including pre-employment entry-level assessments, promotional assessments, public safety director and chief-level evaluations, fitness-for-duty evaluations, and Skills Program readiness assessments. In addition, we routinely conduct crisis incident stress debriefings, team buildings, and trainings for agencies that we serve.
Pre-Employment Entry-Level Evaluations
The psychological assessments that we perform are based on our extensive knowledge of the requirements of specific public safety roles and on valid job-related characteristics. Our assessment procedures include an individual interview with the candidate, a series of psychological tests, and a review of background information.
We provide a clear recommendation that relates to the fit of candidates for not only the specific position for which they are being considered but also for the specific agency. In addition, our reports provide agencies with pragmatic developmental suggestions that enhance the value of the assessment and that can be used by agencies to develop candidates. The feedback that we receive from agencies with whom we work indicates that our overall prediction of candidates’ job performance is highly accurate.
Promotional/Public-Safety Director/Chief-Level Assessments
We recognize that experience alone does not guarantee a solid match in a managerial role. Ensuring that the right people are placed in leadership roles is key to an agency’s effectiveness.
We routinely conduct promotional, public-safety director, and chief-level assessments for public safety agencies. These evaluations share some elements with our entry-level assessments, but they focus predominantly on individuals’ abilities to lead and manage effectively. The report is extensive in nature, and it provides a clear recommendation for the position along with developmental suggestions.
Fitness-for-Duty Evaluations
We have extensive experience in conducting fitness-for-duty evaluations and are able to assist agencies in weighing the interests of the department and the public in determining whether or not employees are “fit” to be in their roles. Our evaluations are extremely comprehensive in nature and include psychological tests, review of collateral background information, and an extensive interview. Agencies receive a clear recommendation as well as pragmatic suggestions designed to assist both the agency and the employee.
Critical Incident Stress Debriefing
Most individuals who are employed in public safety roles adjust well to the demands imposed on them by crisis situations and critical incidents. However, research has shown that Critical Incident Stress Debriefings are valuable in helping employees deal with traumatic events so that they can continue to be effective in their roles.
We conduct both individual and group Critical Incident Stress Debriefings. We help public safety agencies deal effectively with many types of crises, including incidents such as officer-involved shootings and accident scenes.
Training and Team-Building
Training is a critical portion in helping to maximize people’s potential. We help agencies to develop their talent by providing training on various topics, including performance management, communication, political savvy, and motivating employees, to name just a few. Our training workshops provide agencies with practical and innovative ways to handle challenges.
Ensuring that teams work well together is another critical component to achieving success in crisis situations. We help departments strengthen their teams through exercises that we designed to enhance people’s understanding of each other’s strengths and developmental areas.
